Michelle Obama Proving to Hold Big Influence in Fashion World

Recent reports have shown that First Lady Michelle Obama has quite an impact on sales for the fashion labels she wears during public appearances. Studies have shown that when Michelle wears a certain label, the stocks for that company will raise quickly. And the location at which Michelle chooses to wear a certain store or label’s clothing is apparently not important, although when she went to Europe last year, reports show that the companies she represented with her wardrobe at that time gained about an average of 16 percent raise in sales. Also according to reports, with her public appearances numbering over 180, the total value of those appearances was estimated at almost $3 billion.

Michelle Obama has been seen wearing many different labels, including The Gap, Dillards and J. Crew. According to experts, this is part of the reason why her fashion sense has such a financial impact. Michelle is not particular to just one label, and as studies have shown, consumers tend to enjoy the fact that they know she truly does enjoy the clothes she wears as opposed to those who are paid to show off labels. An interesting fact about the stores and labels being bought after First Lady Michelle Obama wears them is that when the consumers go into the stores, they generally don’t buy exactly what she wore, but usually end up leaving the store with something else they found. There are very few celebrities that generate the impact that Michelle has on the fashion industry, and gain, experts.

Former President Bush at Houston Fashion Week Event

Former President George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara made an appearance during Houston Fashion Week which ended last Thursday. They were there playing a supporting role for their their grand daughter Lauren Bush who was presenting her eco-fashion label, Lauren Pierce. This labels’ proceeds go to help fight world hunger and are a way for this younger Bush lady to give back to the world after so much political success in the United States by two of her relatives, George Bush Senior and Junior. In addition, a Texas social icon by the name of Lynn Wyatt was one featured as a designer. She is a 75 year old main stay of the Houston fashion scene and well known for her style of haute couture which incorporates a range of vintage fashion elements from bygone eras. Other designers included the winners from a reality TV show called Project Runway, Christian Siriano and Chloe Dao. Siriano also presented his collection at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York City.

Local Houston websites included mentions of the show and pointed out that unlike similar shows in Milan, Italy; Paris, France; or New York City – the Houston Fashion Week is the only one of its kind to boast a former US President in attendance. They went on to detail the senior Bush’s wardrobe which included a red neck tie and a pinstripe suit in a subtle shade of gray. His wife Barbara wore pearls, white pants and black sweater, emphasizing the low key style she is known for.

Animal Prints Back in Fashion

While they have not really been in vogue for quite some time outside of the popular music video scene, it appears that animal prints are coming back into fashion. Fashion experts have said that the consumer level retail scene is now loaded with a variety of prints that might just remind one of the more jungle aspects of the so called urban jungle these days. The classic style is said not to be a trend of tiger patterns, snake skins and other creature inspired looks, but is actually a fashion mainstay that comes back from time to time. According to recent media accounts of fashion designer Kate Dimmock, animal prints are a real classic that designers love to use to create either pieces that emphasize those designs or to mix in with more neutral elements of an outfit. An example of these would be the leopard print pumps that are this seasons hot item, among many different similarly styled footwear on the market right now.

Of course, even with this more natural theme, the colors do get wild and are not just the more subdued shades of browns, greens, or even tiger orange. Instead, lower price point labels are going for more loud and faux fur jackets, among different offerings. The mid level fashion is offering its own items so consumers can choose from everything animal print from Anny Taylor to JC Penney when they are ready to pick something up that bears similarities with the kingdom of undomesticated beasts.

Fashion Line Leverages Crowd Sourcing to Find Success

The fashion retail web site known as Threadless has counted a huge part of its success from a new technique known as crowd sourcing. The company was founded by Jake Nickell who states that when he first began the site he had no real intention of turning it into a cash cow, but 3 years down the road this web based apparel company has been able to transform itself into a real power house. The project began as a project for art school while Nickell was still learning the ropes. He began it from his house in Chicago and now has more than 70 people employed beneath him. The brand has been built to such an extent that social web experts call it a truly iconic brand name when it comes to fashion of the more casual variety. Initially, the company started out as a hobby that was not seen as one day becoming a business, with Nickell merely wanting people to be able to visit his site, hang out and find the most awesome shirts possible. He did not so much view the site as a retail shop for tee shirts, but rather a place where visitors would be able to create art.

Art historians say that Nickell is pioneering a new wave of art happenings that were popular in bygone decades and used to take place in spaces such as warehouses, artist studios and obscure locations in industrial districts of large metro areas. For Nickell, it all happens right online.
