Nutria Fur Takes The Runway By Storm
Affectionately known as the “swamp rat of the south”, nutria are taking over Louisiana marshes, so an environmentally minded fashion designer has devised a plan. Government agencies blame nutria for severe damage to delicate Louisiana marshland, and over the last few years over 1 million nutria have been destroyed. PETA may not agree, but designers are putting nutria to good use in the form of luxury fur.
The fashion world has silently banned the use of fur for years now, so it is not surprising that many aren’t taking the new found interest in fur lightly. Cree McCree, a Louisiana designer made a preemptive strike. Founding a nonprofit by the name of Righteous Fur, McCree and her group hope to educate the fashion world on the benefits of using this type of fur. McCree goes on to explain that the animals, which are not endangered, are being destroyed in large numbers. Her opinion is that using fur is actually honoring the animal, and is in no way inhumane.
While the argument makes sense, many designers still won’t touch nutria with a 10 foot pole. Years after PETA demonstrators crashed fashion shows and threw red paint on purveyors of fur, the effects are still apparent. It is worth noting that a few designers have been bold enough actually use nutria in their designs. Oscar de la Renta and Billy Reid have both used nutria fur in their latest shows, perhaps being the first to test out the new trend. Righteous Fur has planned a fashion show at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art to further their cause.
